15 October 2026: 44.01 has signed carbon removal offtake agreements with Frontier buyers worth US$11.7 million to permanently remove 20,932 tonnes of CO₂ between 2028 and 2031. It is Frontier’s first purchase of carbon removal using in-situ mineralisation, marking an important commercial endorsement of 44.01’s technology and its potential to provide permanent CO₂ storage around the world.

Frontier has facilitated purchases on behalf of Stripe, Google and Shopify, alongside Autodesk, H&M Group and Workday. Additional participation is through Watershed’s partnership with Frontier. The agreements build on early pre-purchases from Stripe and Shopify in 2022 and take the relationship from early support towards commercial-scale deployment.

The project will combine biogenic CO₂ with permanent storage through mineralisation. It is the first commercial-scale project of its kind and will move 44.01 from short-duration injection campaigns towards continuous operations over multiple years, generating the operating data to inform larger deployments and reduce costs.

The agreement also demonstrates the breadth of the market for 44.01’s technology. The company is developing two complementary applications for the same fundamental storage technology: carbon removal, using biogenic CO₂ to generate permanent removal credits through the Frontier-backed project; and industrial decarbonisation as demonstrated through its existing pilot with Holcim. That project is demonstrating carbon capture and mineralisation under real-world operating conditions at a UAE cement plant.

“This agreement marks an important step for 44.01: moving our technology from demonstration to commercial deployment,” said Talal Hasan, CEO of 44.01. “Frontier and its buyers are backing a fundamentally different approach to permanent carbon removal — turning captured CO₂ into rock. Our focus is now on delivering at commercial scale, continuously improving performance and driving down costs, so that more customers can benefit from this technology.”

Hannah Bebbington Valori, Head of Frontier said “Where we can store CO₂ shouldn’t limit where we can remove it. In-situ mineralization could expand the storage map, making permanent storage practical in places conventional storage can’t economically reach. That’s why we’repurchasing from 44.01: to prove out the technology and ready it for commercial scale.”

44.01’s technology accelerates a natural process that turns CO₂ into rock. CO₂ is dissolved in water and injected into reactive rock formations underground, where it reacts with minerals to form stable, solid carbonates. Once mineralised, the CO₂ is permanently locked away.

Mineralisation complements conventional geological storage by expanding the global map of locations where permanent CO₂ storage is possible. Conventional geological storage is concentrated in locations with suitable sedimentary basins and often depends on large-scale transport and shared infrastructure. Mineralisation creates another option in locations where reactive geology lies closer to the source.

The Frontier-backed project will test sustained injection rates, water requirements, and the costs of continuous operation. These results will help establish the basis for larger, economically viable projects, with applications across carbon removal and industrial decarbonisation.

The Frontier-backed project will provide operating data to inform the development of larger projects as 44.01 works to establish in-situ mineralisation as an economically viable, scalable global CO₂ storage solution for permanent carbon removal and industrial decarbonisation.

About 44.01
