- Holcim and JERA back 44.01 to help advance first-of-a-kind commercial-scale projects in the Middle East and international expansion of in-situ mineralisation.
- Investment builds on successful pilot operations with Holcim in the UAE and an $11.7m carbon removal offtake with Frontier buyers.
4 November 2026 – Global building materials company Holcim and JERA, a global energy company and Japan's largest power generator, have invested in 44.01 to support the carbon storage technology company's scale-up in the Middle East and its international expansion. Existing investors, including ALIAD (Air Liquide Venture Capital) and Climate Investment, have also provided additional funding to 44.01.
The investment is a significant vote of confidence in 44.01's in-situ mineralisation technology and its potential to become a global solution for permanent CO₂ storage.
44.01 accelerates the natural process of carbon mineralisation by mixing captured CO₂ in water to be injected into underground reactive rock formations, where it forms stable carbonate minerals within two to three years. The technology enables permanent CO₂ storage close to industrial emitters and carbon removal projects, reducing both transport costs and long-term monitoring requirements compared to more distant conventional storage sites.
Holcim's investment builds on an established partnership. Since July 2026, 44.01 and Holcim have operated a pilot under live industrial conditions in the United Arab Emirates, capturing CO₂ from Holcim's Fujairah plant and storing it safely underground at 44.01's nearby site. The project is providing valuable real-world operating experience to support the next phase of commercial scale-up.
JERA’s investment marks 44.01’s first backing from the power sector. JERA aims to combine its understanding of decarbonization needs with 44.01’s technological expertise to explore potential applications of CO₂ mineralization technology in power generation, as well as broader business opportunities in Japan and overseas.
44.01 is scaling in the Middle East, developing projects in Europe and exploring a pipeline of opportunities in other markets. The company also recently announced an $11.7 million carbon removal offtake with Frontier buyers including Google, H&M, Shopify and Stripe.
Talal Hasan, CEO, 44.01 said: “We're delighted to have Holcim and JERA backing 44.01. Both understand the challenges of industrial decarbonisation and the need for practical, scalable solutions. Their investment is a strong endorsement as we move towards commercial-scale operations and bring our technology to new markets around the world.”
Ram Muthu, Head of Operational Excellence, Holcim said: "Holcim’s investment in 44.01 builds on our existing project in the UAE, where together we are already storing captured carbon in rock formations near our Fujairah plant. 44.01’s breakthrough technology enables storage close to production given the right geological conditions, advancing decarbonization in line with Holcim’s NextGen Growth 2030 strategy. This pathway can help us manage captured carbon at inland sites across our operations where access to offshore storage may be limited."
Takeshi Kodama, Head of JERA Ventures and Managing Partner, said: “As the power sector works toward decarbonization, we see significant value in exploring new approaches to permanent CO₂ storage. Our investment in 44.01 offers an interesting opportunity to deepen our understanding of an emerging technology that could broaden the range of decarbonization solutions available to the energy industry.”
The new funding will accelerate 44.01's international expansion and support its transition towards continuous, commercial-scale operations, focusing on technology improvements, reducing costs and developing first-of-a-kind commercial projects in the Middle East.
About 44.01
44.01 develops technology that accelerates the natural process of CO₂ mineralisation, turning captured CO₂ into rock underground. Its technology can permanently store carbon captured from industrial processes, the atmosphere and biogenic sources, supporting both industrial decarbonisation and carbon removal. Developed in the Middle East, 44.01's award-winning technology is now being scaled in the region and developed internationally.
